We just wanted to stream.

SecureStreamStudio wasn't a product idea — it was a workaround that got out of hand. We were livestreaming our way through OpenUSD certification and needed a real remote studio. The free tools were rough, the good ones wanted a subscription to broadcast our own work — so, being engineers, we built the thing ourselves.

How we got here

01

It started with the streams

We were running our sessions live on YouTube, working our way through OpenUSD certification. We just wanted a clean way to get two people, a screen share, and a decent layout on air.

02

VDO.Ninja got us close

Powerful, free, and genuinely clever — but fiddly for an actual show. Great for a quick peer link; not the production setup we wanted to run every week.

03

StreamYard & Riverside nailed it — for a price

Polished, reliable, exactly the experience we were after. And locked behind a monthly subscription just to broadcast our own work, with our media living on someone else's cloud.

04

So we built our own

Two engineers, one decision: we don't rent what we can build. Self-hosted, secure, no per-seat fee, no third party owning the stream. That refusal to pay the toll is the whole reason this exists.

What we built instead

Not a clone of any of them — the version we actually wanted: reliable, private, and ours. A secure, self-hosted, browser-native live-streaming studio with no app to install and no third-party SaaS in the middle.

  • ›A LiveKit WebRTC SFU routing encrypted real-time media between every participant.
  • ›Headless-Chromium egress that composites the scene and pushes it straight to YouTube Live.
  • ›A real live-metrics dashboard — every number sampled from the actual machine, not faked.
  • ›A capacity guard that caps load gracefully instead of melting the box under pressure.
  • ›A Google-Meet-style lobby, pre-join waiting room, and host-admit flow with locked-down access.
  • ›All of it on a single self-hosted box we own end to end — no subscription, no SaaS.

Same goal as the tools we tried — get a good-looking, dependable stream out the door — just without the subscription or the lock-in.
